HIKING: (Doug Ghee) Bald Rock Boardwalk Trail at Cheaha State Park

← AL COOSA RIVER WETUMPKA AL Triple Blaze →

Description

Take an easy stroll down a unique boardwalk trail named after a long-time supporter of Alabama's state parks. Located in Cheaha State Park, the hike ends in a rock outcropping that offers magnificent views of the surrounding valley and mountains. Opened in June 2000, this elevated boardwalk trail was designed to be accessible to everyone regardless of physical ability. Named after former Democratic Senator Doug Ghee, a long-time supporter of Alabama's state parks and primary innovator of Alabama's Forever Wild land acquisition and conservation program, this 1,519-foot trail is short for a "trail" but long for a boardwalk, especially one located in such a remote area. The parking area for this trail is located to the side of the Bald Rock Group Lodge, in front of the trailhead. One-quarter-mile in length, this interpretive trail terminates in a scenic overlook from where views stretch halfway to Birmingham.
